The Rebirth of Chokers

Updated: Feb 19, 2020

Chokers have made their comeback in the world of Fashion. First seen in the 1970’s, they were worn as an accessory and soon became very popular. Chokers were the perfect match for a free-flowing, trendy 70’s shirt. During this adventurous time in fashion, chokers came in a variety of styles such as velvet, chunky beads, and the most popular, macramé.

Many of us 90’s kids think of chokers as the go-to accessory people wore to spice up their outfit. The black and red stretchy necklaces were nearly seen on everyone at some point. Celebrities made chokers a trend in the 90’s and made them popular with every young teen (Lizzie McGuire, Lindsay Lohan, and of course, Mary-Kate and Ashley). Chokers were truly the thing to wear.

After their late 90’s/early 2000’s takeover, chokers casually lost their spot as the no. 1 go-to accessory in fashion. Just like all trends, chokers have made their way back to being one of fashion’s hottest items to accessorize with. Not only are they in stores like Forever21, H&M, Express, AEO and more, they have appeared in fashion shows by top designers on the runway. Chokers are also popular on the red carpet and seen on celebrities such as Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Zendaya, Rita Ora, and Taylor Swift. Models such as Gigi and Bella Hadid have also been seen rockin’ chokers with their outfits.

The beauty of the choker is that it can add a pop of color to your look, or keep it classic and cool. No matter how you choose to wear yours, chokers have once again made a comeback in the world of fashion. Whatever you're feeling that day, a choker will definitely add some sass to any outfit you pair it with.
