Same Piece, Different Look

By Jordan Ensign

Rewearing our clothes is practical both for financial and environmental reasons. The most sustainable thing we can do is use what we already have—but what happens when we’re feeling bored with what we have?

Sweaters are my go-to pieces for these colder months, partly because they’re incredibly versatile. One sweater can be styled and restyled in so many ways throughout the season, and doing so helps me avoid getting bored with even my most frequently reworn ones. Today, I’m sharing three of my favorite ways to style one sweater, in the hopes that it will help you start thinking about the untapped fashion potential of what’s already hanging in your closet.

The Tee Shirt

This is one of my favorite ways to layer a sweater, especially if it has a wider neckline. I tend to opt for a neutral tee—it’s a great, consistent option that always works out. But if you’re looking to add a little more excitement to your look, consider a bright color or a pattern! And a tee is only the beginning—collared shirts and turtlenecks are two other great options. All three of these options can also be worked into several different outfits. Whether you pair this with jeans or a skirt, heels or loafers, throwing a shirt under a sweater is a great way to take two pieces you already own and work them into something new.

The Dress

Consider getting some more wear out of your summer staples by layering a sweater underneath or overtop of a dress, or pairing it with a mini skirt. This is something that can be dressed up or down, depending on the way you style it and the specific pieces you choose to pair together. As we move towards colder weather, a pair of tights and some boots could be a great option for taking a summer piece and placing it at the center of a winter outfit! Not only are you getting more wear out of your winter staples, but you're also finding ways to style your warm-weather pieces year-round.

The Jacket

Don’t count out your outer layers, especially if you’re picking an outfit for an outdoor activity. A denim jacket, puffer vest, or trench coat are all easy ways to elevate a winter outfit, especially as temperatures start to drop. In addition to being a practical way to stay warm, a jacket can also be a great way to add texture to a simple outfit. Plus, a jacket could be added to either of the above options to make the outfit more suitable for lower temperatures and to add an extra layer of interest to your outfit!

The secret to a comprehensive winter wardrobe isn’t a major haul—it’s taking stock of what you already own and thinking of ways to style your pieces in a way that suits the season. New clothes aren’t a necessity for each new season. All you need is what you already own, plus a little creative thinking. These ideas that I’ve shared are just three of many. The sky’s the limit when it comes to personal style!
