The Cultural Shift of Chappell Roan

By Lindsay Roman

The cover photo for Chappell Roans album "The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess". It shows Roan wearing drag makeup - which helps her bright red curly hair pop. She is wearing a sash that resembles ones you'd a padgeant winner wearing, that says "Chappell" on it.

Chappell Roan is a skyrocketing LGBTQIA+ singer known for her Pink Pony Club and Good Luck Babe songs. Recently, Chappell was asked about her fashion sense on the Tonight Show. She talked about how she gets her inspiration from horror movies, theater, burlesque, and drag queens. You can see her on stage wearing leotards and tights with bold makeup. Her iconic red hair is also what she is remembered for in the fashion industry.

Recently, a TikTok filter came out with drag-style makeup and her red hairstyle with a crown, so people can try the filter on to see if they can pull off the look just as well as Chappell. This is a huge cultural shift because drag queen shows were banned in some states in America just last year.

Chappell Roan performs on stage dressed as the US's famous statue of Liberty, or "lady liberty". She is covered in head-to-toe green body paint, a modern take od the dress with spikes and a green tank top, and a green crown.

In October, Chappell will be performing in Texas twice, one of the states with a drag ban. Truthfully, I feel that Roan’s fans outweigh those who do not appreciate her fashion. I do believe that there’s a possibility her rise in fame will change the way these states view drag. LGBTQIA+ music has become more popular over the years, and I will be excited to see how it changes our society as I get older and see where Chappell Roan goes in the future.
