What to Have For a Hike

Having a great time outside with friends is something that we are looking forward to doing safely this summer. When you find yourself getting ready to go for your next hiking adventure, it’s important to have everything you need. As a seasoned hiker and outdoorswoman here is my list of adventure must haves!

When dressing to go for your adventure, make sure you have layers. It’s so much easier to take a layer off and put it in your pack than it is to be miserable the whole time. The one layer that you should always have with you is a rain jacket. Especially in PA, the weather can be unpredictable, and you don’t want to get drenched in the middle of the woods.

Even more importantly, the shoes you wear can make the world of difference. Hiking boots are the go-to any time I go for a hike. If you’re getting hiking boots for the first time, I highly recommend investing in a quality pair of high-top boots that are waterproof. Try your best to break in the boots before going on a long hike. Not doing that can give you nasty blisters and leave your feet sore for days. Wearing high socks is also important to avoid getting poison ivy or stinging nettle.

In your backpack, there are a few things you need no matter what. I recommend always having sunscreen, bug spray, extra socks, a portable charger, and obviously lots of water. While not necessary, it’s also fun to bring a speaker, hammock or picnic with you to savor your time outside. I would also recommend bringing some kind of protection and med-kit. Bringing something like pepper spray is a good idea, especially when hiking in a secluded area. Thorn cuts and other minor injuries are common so having a mini med kit with things like band aids, alcohol wipes, and Bactine can be helpful.

Packing for an overnight hike is a lot more involved than a day hike, but this provides a good base to be prepared for your next adventure!
